PAPARUA ROADS
More Money Wanted
The Paparua County Council’s hopes for extra roading assistance was put to the National Roads Board yesterday in submissions presented by the deputy chairman (Cr. D. 11. Warren). He said that the council’s population had doubled to 19,000 in the last 10 years, and would double again in the next decade. This had put heavy pressure on the council to extend services.
By its location, the county had to accept a high percentage of through traffic along almost all of its roads leading to and from the metropolitan area.
While the council considered that these facts qualified it for more roading finance, it had received only token special roading assistance. The council’s subsidised works programme amounted to about £lOO,OOO a year, but in the last two years it had received no special assistance by way of grant over and above the normal subsidy. The council’s main aim was to complete the sealing of all important county roads as quickly as possible, and it regretted that its recent application for £3 for £2 subsidy had been turned down by the board.
The counci, also asked that the Sockburn-Leeston road be declared a State highway.
