Golfers’ Wicket

Golfers who use the school grounds for practice are causing the groundsman some concern, the headmaster of Aranui High School (Mr W. J. A. Brittenden) told the school board of governors yesterday. “We encourage local people to use the ground-; if they want to,” Mr Brittenden said, “but I think the golfers expect too much. They cause quite a lot of damage to the turf, and their favourite tee-ing-off spot is right in the middle of the school cricket pitch.” Clear Day Clear skies and cool to moderate temperatures were the main features of the weather in Christchurch yesterday, after a three-degree frost. A light to moderate southwesterly wind kept temperatures down, a maximum of 51 degrees being recorded at Harewood about 2 p.m. A temperature of 39 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 6 a.m. This decreased to 36 degrees at 9 a.m. By noon the temperature had risen to 49 degrees. At 3 p.m. the temperature at Harewood was 50 degrees: the same figure being recorded at the Botanic Gardens. The temperature gauge on the Government Life Building showed 50 degrees at 4.30 p.m. There was a heavy shower in the early evening. Thanks From India ‘I thank you on behalf of the Diocese of Coembatore from the bottom of my heart for this timely generous gift from the Council of Churches in New Zealand.” said the Rt. Rev. S. J. Sammuel, in a letter to the general secretary of the New Zealand council, the Rev. D. M. Taylor. He was thanking the council for £lOOO sent to aid rehabilitation of a group of extremely poor villages. The money has been

sent to a badly hit famine area, and will “go a long way in the work of rehabilitation ... it could not have come at a better time than now,” Bishop Sammuel said.
