Man Stole 70 Cheques

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 8. A Social Security beneficiary, Denis Dudley Woolier, aged 55, stole 70 cheques worth about £4913 from the Central Post Office, Sergeant M. K. Huggard said in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court

Before Mr E. F. Rothwell, S.M., Woolier pleaded guilty to three charges of theft He was convicted and remanded in custody until Friday for a probation officer’s report and sentence. Sergeant Huggard, for the police, said Woolier on April 25 noticed that a private post box leased by John Reid and Company, Ltd., was partly open. He took mail from it home.

He kept 64 cheques of a face value of more than £4500. He later opened a trading bank account with five of the cheques for £237 in the name of John Reid and Company, Ltd. Issued Cheques He received cheque books and proceeded to issue cheques, but these were recalled to the bank. The remaining cheques were found on Woolier at the time of his arrest. Earlier, on April 20, Wool-

ler bad gone to the post office and found on the floor an envelope containing a £149 cheque, the property of Sails and Covers, Ltd. Woolier opened another trading bank account in the name of the firm and began issuing cheques. Some £127 remained in the account.
