Station Handed Over
(H.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 8. Behind the closed doors of an Invercargill Mlidtor’s office a cheque for £450,000, the purchase price of Burwood station, bought from Mr W. E. Hazlett by the Lands and Survey Department, was formerly handed over on Friday. The name “Burwood,” which has been associated with the Hazlett family for many years, will
not be used by the department
The 135,000 acre property, 10 miles north of Mossburn, and about 75 miles from Invercargill, will now be known as the Mavora farm settlement
The purchase price was £450,000.
Stock taken over by the department included 28,000 sheep and 2300 cattle.
“This purchase means that Southland’s contribution to land settlement In New Zealand will be almost doubled,” Mr W. A. Bowick, the Commissioner of Crown Lands In Invercargill, said.
From its orlgnal Southland holdings the department had hoped to develop about 150 farm units. Now it seemed likely that the number would be close to 300.
