Roganne Improves To Win At Te Rapa
(Neto Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. Roganne and Careen formed a successful combination in the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s winter meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday.
Poganne, after being well back early, improved quickly to trail the leaders, Five Spot and Yardstick, on the turn in the President’s Handicap. She continued her run to win by two lengths ' from Bright Chief which was close to the leaders throughout. Bright Chief nosed Yard stick out of second in the last stride. Old Parr was a length away fourth in front of All Smoke, Pretty Lucky, Five Spit, and Captain Rebel. Careen, at the tail of the big field until the home turn, finished brilliantly to win the Golden Mile Handicap from Corbassiere and Queen’s Poet, which outfinished Gold Imp. Rochdale was a close fifth just shading Trueman. Mavis Brae, last early, Arbelle and White Strand headed the others. Karinx, Charter, Odeon and Weatherley were first into line, but all weakened. The meeting was held in fine weather, but the track was holding. Result!:— MATANGI HURDLES, £800; about Um.-VJ DANNY MOLLOY (1) 10-5 J. Hely 1; 5/3 SUNNY DAKAR (5) 9-5 A.
