SAMOANS SHORT OF RICE
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.AJ APIA, May 8. Most of the stores in Apia have sold out of rice and all stocks are expected to be exhausted soon.
The next shipment of rice from Australia is not due for another month, and emergency supplies are being shipped from Suva by the Tofua next week.
The great increase in the sale of rice over the last two weeks has resulted from damage to food crops by the recent hurricane and, according to the economic Development Department, it is a "conclusive sign that village food production is low and that people are coming in from villages to buy rice and other essential commodities in Apia.” The Samoan Government has requested 1700 tons of rice, flour, canned fish,
canned beef, milk powder and vegetable oil from world food programmes and monthly rations through the United States Catholic Relief Services of 200 tons of flour, 140 tons of vegetable oil, and 450 tons of bulger wheat.
