United States ground forces today spread out through rice paddies hunting an estimated 30 to 40 Viet Cong guerrillas left after one of the larger victories of the Vietnam war the destruction of more than a battalion with 446 guerrilla troops known dead. Colonel Hal Moore, the officer whose helicopter-borne troops had surprised the guerrillas, said the enemy did something he had never seen before. “He got out of his trenches and ran around in absolute confusion,” Colonel Moore said.
