Tree's Welfare First
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 29. Work on the £1,250,000 Southmall shopping centre which could endanger Manurewa's bestknown landmark its 110 ft Christmas tree on the Great South road—“must be suspended." the Manukau City Council has told the architects for the scheme. The architects had asked the council to re-
move the 95-year-old Norfolk pine because “planned building and roading works within 20ft of the tree will endanger its safe condition.” But a landscape architect, Mr D. W. Hobrough, told the council that the tree should be preserved at all costs.
The city's deputymanager, Mr G. S. Davies, who was formerly town clerk of Manurewa borough, said the tree
had become part of Manurewa. “It is a beautiful tree In the heart of Manurewa,” he said. “For years it has been lit at Christmas, and seen for miles around.” The council decided last night that a condition of approval for construction of the centre was that the pine must not be removed without the council’s written consent
