Games Fund Unsupported

Australia, which has decided to support Edinburgh for the 1970 Empire Games rather than Christchurch, has received a set-back in its efforts to raise funds to send its team to Jamaica later this year.

An attempt to gain contributions from the general public in New South Wales realised only 80 dollars 10 cents. Of the 120,000 dollars required for Australia to send a team of 103 competitors, New South Wales’s share was to have ben 40,000 dollars. After expenses had been deducted, New South Wales contributed 11,378 dollars 14 cents.

Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland have fulfilled their quotas, but Victoria has raised only 12,000 dollars of its 30,000 dollar allotment.

i However, it is expected that the Australian Govcrn;ment will make a grant of 20,000 dollars ,at least, to the team fund.
