GUARD FIRED ON SULTAN

(N Z P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) ADEN, April 29. Five soldiers stepped forward to present arms to the Sultan of Muscat and Oman—but opened fire at him from point-blank range instead. An eye-witness of the dramatic assassination bid last Tuesday at a military parade at Salalah. in the Sultanate’s southern Dhofar district, said yesterday that the Sultan escaped unhurt but five other people were killed. The five men, members of the Dhofar section of the Sultan’s armed forces, were thwarted by their commanding officer, who pushed the Sultan from the saluting base.
