(From Our Own Reporter)
BLENHEIM. The Awapuni trainer, M. B. Andrews, saddled Dine And Dance and Sabaean Summer to win the on-course double at Blenheim yesterday. The combination paid £lB 16s for £l. This was shared by the holders of 193 5s tickets.
Dine and Dance kept his winning record as a jumper intact —he had won at his first attempt over hurdles on Saturday—by outclassing his rivals in the Wairau Hack Hurdles, for which he was the 2/1 favourite. Sabaean Summer, a minor place-getter in his two earlier races at the meeting, out-ran the hack sprinters in the Seddon Handicap. He was the third favourite for a win and place but the popular choice for the double. Thnc and Dance and Bandarshar ran together from the seven furlongs till the halfmile. but the former’s superior pace on the flat took him clear by a length on the home tarn, in the run from the last fence it was Dine And Dance all the way and he won by seven lengths. Bandarshar beat William David for second by four lengths. The Riccarton jumper was being hard ridden a long wav from home to nold his place on the soft track and it was only his stamina which carried him past the til it g Maguire’s Peter in the run home. Maguire’s Peter, which lead the chase after the leaders till the home turn, was three lengths back fourth. Faircourt was next, well clear of Sydtrev. Makara was beaten right off. Sabaean Summer improved from the fourth* line to join Jayess in front on the home turn io the Seddon Hack Handicap, drew away just inside the furlong, and ran it out best to win by three parts of a length. Omasong, midfield at the halfmile but fourth into Une, fought on well for second, a length and a half ahead of Bold Int ader, which was close up all the way and was co-leader with Jayess and Sabaean Summer just outside the furlong. Serengeti, back early but four wide with the leaders at the half-mile, was three lengths away fourth. Jayess £as fifth
in a similar gap, and SMver Princess led in the others.
Golden Supreme, a complete failure in her two ear Mer starts at the meeting, showed her appreciation of the easier ground to win the Trial Stakes at good odds for Mr R. D. Vance and her Wingatui trainer, E. Stapleton. Golden Supreme ran from the trailing position into the lead on the home turn and was cut by three lengths from Oriental, but only lasted long enough to beat her Opaki rival by a nose. Myree kept her winning record at the meeting intact when she came out best in a battling finish with Marand in the West Derby Handicap. Myree and Marand ran together in the lead till the last furlong. W. D. Skelton, on Myree, was first to go for the whip as Marand inched ahead, but a stride or two later R. M. Taylor was also hard at work on h:s mount. Myree, on the ins-ide, responded gamely again to some vigorous handling in the last 30 yards and got up to win by a head. Bellburn, which led the chase after the first two right through the race, was two and a half lengths away. Sound Run Home Mr Jones improved a sound record for his Hunterville owner, Mrs R. M. Bull, by outclassing the staying hacks in the Champion Handicap. Mr Jones drew away from the others in the run home after disputing the pace almost from the start. H. N. Rauhihi, having his first ride at the meeting, did not have to work hard to get him home first by two lengths and a half. In a tight finish for second Norway beat Lordtuckey by half a head. Norway improved from midfield to jorin Lordtuckey in the third line on the home turn and there was stHl little beween them with a furlong to go. Donnaway Improved the record of wet track horses at the meeting when he outclassed his rivals in the Dash Hack Handicap. Donnaway chased Gingerbread and Willmore round the home turn, went clear as soon as they straightened for the run home, and drew right away to wm by five lengths. Bold Invader, second last after a furlong, but fourth into line, fought on for second, four lengths ahead of Indian Chief, which was never far off the pace.
