BELL MAN SHOCKS BLENHEIM BETTERS
(From Our Own Reporter) BLENHEIM. Beil Man from Washdyke and the Awapuni-trained Royal Admiral was the successful combination for the T.A.B. double on the final day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s annual meeting at Blenheim yesterday.
They returned the holders of 477 5s tickets a dividend of £256 10s for £l.
It was fitting that Bell Man should win the first leg, the Bellborough Handicap, for he was the only son of his sire, Bellborough, in the field. Beside the £325 in cash, he won for his Washdyke ownertrainer, Mr N. A. Clark, the trophy—a service fee to Bellborough valued at £l5O. But Bell Man’s victory—his first for the season—was not a good result as far as betters were concernel. He was the tenth favourite of 11 after weak showings on the first two days of the meeting and paid £27 7s and £7 4s 6d for a win and a place. In a double pool worth £37,011 he carried 2291 10s tickets, of which 40 were held on the course.
Bell Man was ridden with good judgment by the successful Riccarton apprentice, B. A. Edens. He rode him back in the field in the early stages of the race but had him in touch with the pace half a mile out In the run home he saved ground on the inside and had the race won just inside the last furlong. Back To Form
Royal Admiral, a fair fourth on the first day but well beaten among the sprint-1 ers on Saturday, came back to the form which gave him five wins and a second from six starts in hack class on the Marlborough-Nelson circuit 12 months ago by outrunning his rivals in the Majestic Handicap. Royal Admiral, which is prepared at Awapuni by E. Temperton for Mr J. H. T. Duncan, of Hunterville, was the 5/4 favourite of eight and paid £8 Ils and £2 Ils 6d for a win and place. Royal Admiral was one of 10 horses Temperton had at the meeting. They gave him second place on the list of leading trainers. The trainers’ trophy went to J. T. Walker, of Opaki, who prepares a' large team for Mr A. Clous-1 ton. Their efforts earned j him 34 points. Riders’ Award The jockeys’ trophy went to W. D. Skelton, who gained 22 points, one more than R. W. Taylor. The apprentices’ prize was won by W. D. Dymond. He earned 15 points, one more than J. A. Messent. The meeting was held in cool, overcast weathe and the track was soft after heavy rain in Blenheim during the previous night. On-course investments yesterday amounted to £18,586, including £3933 on the doubles, compared with £22,243 on the third day last year.
The total for the three days was £64,476 10s, com-
pared with £79,273 10s last year. Two Behind Bell Man had onfiy Lor as tan and Lacy Gray behind him as the field left the straight after two furlongs in the Bellborough Handicap. Taxman was in front at the stage, but His Host went ahead by a length with seven furlongs to go. Grand Coeur joined Taxman. Then came Warm Up, Te Aro < making hard work of it in the ground). Lucky Son and Tax Evader and Golden Vanity. Grand Coeur whent forward to join His Host in the lead near the half-mile. Taxman ran half a length back on the outside. Warm Up was trailing and Tax Evader and Bell Man were with him. Lucky Son, Golden Vanity and Lucy Gra5 T headed the others, and Te Aro had dropped out to last in a gap of three lengths. Grand Coeur went forward as one as they came to the straight. Bell Man was alone and going well right in behind them. Warm Up (under pressure), Golden Vandty, Lorastan and Lucy Gray were next, but in a small gap. Once they straightened for the run home Belli Man came through on the inner and had Grand Coeur mastered just inside the furlong. Tax Evader was close at hand and running on well, ahead of Lorastan, Lucy Gray and Taxman almost in line. Bell Man won as he liiked by two lengths and a half and Tax Evader outfinished Grand Coeur for second by half a neck. Lucy Gray was a length away fourth, and Lorastan was fifth by a similar margin. Taxman was next in a small gap, clear of Warm Up, Golden Vanity, Lucky Son, Te Aro and His Host. Disputed Pace Royal Admiral disputed the pace with Waverley from the five furlongs to the home turn in the Majestic Handicap. He had only a short lead over Vivien Robe at the furlong, but stiild lasted it out best to win by a neck from Dark Seaman. Dark Seaman, the taid-ender half a mile out, came on the scene with a powerful late run just outside the furlong. It enabled him to run Royal Admiral to a neck and he outfinished Vivien Robe for second by half a length. Vivien Robe, which tracked the co-leaders until the home turn and was almost abreast of Royal Admiral at the straight entrance was in no danger of losing third place. She beat Carnbeg, fourth on the home turn by three lengths. Waverley was a weakening fifth. Then came Tawa and Tutton. Might, which failed to 1 handle the going, was right at jthe back. | Results: WAIRAU HACK HURDLES, £250; 13f.—2/1 DINE AND DANCE <3) 10-1 C. I. Goss 1; 1/2 BANDARSHAR (2) 10-5 G. T.
