Tariff Rates On Scales Amended By Govt.

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 21. The Government has decided to accept the recommendations of the Tariff and i Development Board on the duty payable on weighing machinery. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said that the board’s proposal involved provision for the “determination procedure” to operate in respect of certain classes of weighing machinery. “Types excluded from the operation of this procedure would be domestic scales other than personal weighing scales, and certain industrial weighing machines such as coal-weighers, overhead track scales and weigh-bridges which are already subject to protective rates of duty,” he said. The alterations would come into force on July 1 when it was proposed to determine scales having a receptacle in the form of a platform, of a maximum rated weighing capacity of 1001 b or more, but excluding counting scales and :

personal weighers of all types. “Such scales will be liable to duty under the determination at the rates of 25 per cent (British preferential tariff) and to 45 per cent from most foreign sources of supply.” Mr Shelton said the board would be reporting later this year on the question of duty on bathroom scales in the light of development in their production in New Zealand.
