Warning Given Students
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 21. Male students caught causing disturbances at University of Otago women’s hostels will risk expulsion from the university. » This warning is contained in a message from' the ViceChancellor, Dr. A. Beacham published in this week’s issue of the university newspaper | “Critic." -
"A number of incidents have occurred recently in which men students have disturbed the normal and peaceful functioning of women's halls of residence,” Dr. Beacham said.
“It may save much misunderstanding and future tin happiness if I now make it clear that I do not intend to tolerate this kind of behaviour.
“In future cases, where this seems appropriate, the police will be asked to prefer charges, and I shall refer cases to the board of discipline with a recommendation of permanent expulsion from the university.” The warden of Studholme
hall, Mrs E. M. Dunn, said there had been a number of prowler incidents in recent months. On one occasion recently, staff chased a man found on the roof of the hostel. Mrs Dunn said he was presumed to be a student
“It is rather frightening for the girls,' 'she said, “especially since there are no men on the staff.”
Mrs H. J. Ryburn, warden of St. Margaret’s College, said all women’s hostels had been affected. She would not discuss individual incidents but one student said there had been cases involving male students on the hostel premises.
