Wider U.S. Social Security Benefits
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 10. President Johnson announced in San Antonio, Texas, that he would ask Congress next year to increase payments made to oldage pensioners, the disabled and other beneficiaries of the social security system.
He also said the proposed new legislation would include a provision to extend assist-
ance for dental treatment for young children. He disclosed his plans when signing a bill to extend the deadline for old age pensioners to sign up for optional benefits available under the new “Medicare” scheme, financed through the social security system. “Medicare” provides hospital and nursing home benefits for pensioners at no extra charge beyond the compulsory contributions paid during working years. Payments for doctors’ fees are available for a small additional monthly fee. The president, in announcing the proposed dental scheme, said that “Medicare” need not be just for people over the age of 65, but should be made available to children under six. White House officials said it had not been decided whether it would involve all children or only those from low-income families.
