With about 200 postal votes still to be counted, the Liberal Party has retained the Melbourne seat of Kooyong, held by the former Australian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies. Voting in the by-election was held on April 2. The interim figures are: P. A. Brereton (Independent), 779; C. B. Cock (Republican), 220; W. F. Cooper (Labour), 12,170; B. W. Gaynor (Democratic Labour Party), 5850; A. Peacock (Liberal), 24,973; and informal 898.
