Excellent Sale For Glen Lyon Calves
Price rises of up to £l2 10s a head over last year were obtained at the annual sale of beef-bred calves from the Glen Lyon and Huxley Gorge stations at Temuka on Thursday.
A large gallery competed keenly for the offering, totalling 613 head, and the sale was completed in 40 minutes. An average of £25 6s 6d was obtained for the 31 pens. Quite a number of pens were bought for Ashburton county, a pen of 20 steer calves was bought for Cheviot, and three pens of Hereford heifer calves, totalling 52 head, were purchased by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd., for a Gore client.
The keenness with which the heifer calves were sought was a feature of the sale, and the prices paid indicate that most of them were bought for breeding.
The entry comprised 277 Hereford steer calves, 152 Hereford heifer calves, 82 Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross steer calves, and 102 heifer calves of the same breeding.
Top price was £36 10s for a pen of 20 Hereford heifer calves, which went to an Ashburton buyer. Last year the top pen made £24, arid others sold down to £l3 10s, but on Thursday, all of them met an animated sale for a pen average of £26 Bs, Of the eight pens offered, only two sold below £3O, and the average was an excellent £26 Bs.
Bidding for the Hereford steer calves began on a strong note, the first of them realising £27. but the majority sold from £23 5s to £25 10s. with the lowest price being £2O ss. The pen average here was £24 5s exactly. Last year they sold from £l3 5s to £2l 15s.
Only four pens of the annual draft consisted of Aberdeen Angus-Hereford cross steer calves, but they sold very well, the price range being £25 10s to £3O 10s, and the pen average. £27 12s 6d. Last year they sold from £2O to £22.
Values for the Aberdeen Angus cross heifer calves showed a tremendous rise on last year. Eighty of the 102 offered sold from £22 10s to £24 10s, with the remainder selling at £l9 10s. The pen average of £22 17s was £7 2s better than the top price last year. The calves came forward In excellent order, and had obviously been well handled. They had been on the road for two weeks on their way from the high country to Temuka saleyards. On a comparative basis, the large Hereford steer calves and the small steer calves, were considered to be above Addington rates, while the medium class of steer calf was estimated to be £1 to £2 short of rates ruling for similar calves at Addington on Wednesday. It was, nevertheless, an excellent sale for the vendors.
