ATTITUDE TO MAORIS
Secretary Sees Change

Many years ago there had been certain periods in the life of the Maori people when those with a little Maori blood had tried to hide it, Mr J. McEwen, Secretary of Maori Affairs, said yesterday. The attitude had now changed, and the Maori people had contributed greatly to the change. He was guest speaker at a conference associated with the fifth reunion of members of the 28th (Maori) Battalion. “You are in the midst of a revolution as important as the English Industrial Revolution.” he said.
. The Maori was not sitting down and doing nothing. There had been increases in the number of pupils gaining School Certificate and gaining apprenticeships. Mr McEwen said, however, that Maori children were handicapped because of their vocabulary.
