Britain And E.E.C.
Sir, —As recent cables indicate, all three political parties in the United Kingdom are now advocating Britain’s joining the Common Market at some future date. It behoves us to study the implications for New Zealand. The issue will not be decided by us and we should concentrate our studies on forward-looking policies, not in burying our heads in the sand and rigidly opposing any move by the United Kingdom Government. By no means has it been conclusively provied that Commonwealth association with the Common Market would be harmful. After all, it has not harmed the former French colonies, all of whom, with the sponsorship of France, have some form of association with the E.E.C.—Yours, etc., F. T. THORPY. Auckland, March 23, 1966.
