Relics Of Early Christchurch
Sir,—The Civic Trust’s commendation of the Canterbury Club’s initiative in restoring the old ga s lamp and preserving the hitching-post beside it will be applauded by all citizens with an interest in reminders of early Christchurch. The removal of the hitching rail beside the Provincial Buildings is to be regretted. You report that the trust will consider other “letters of credit.” One should surely go to those responsible for the care that is being taken to preserve the hitchingpost beside the Bank of New Zealand, in spite of all the work going on around it. The preservation of this old relic of the horse-drawn days, right in the centre of the city, deserves public recognition and thanks. —Yours, etc., ALISON MacGIBBON. March 23, 1966.
