Swimmer To Make All-out Bid

IBy Our Swimming Reporter]

New Zealand’s fastest woman sprint swimmer, Alison McMillan, is to make a determined eleventh hour bid to win Empire Games nomination. The 18*year«old Wharenui club swimmer has been out of the water for the two weeks since the national championships ended, but resumed full training on Wednesday night.

Next week she plans to go to Dunedin for two weeks to train at the Moana pool. This period will coincide with two or three important carnivals, at which several leading swimmers will be taking part. One of these is a special carnival on April 18 to be attended by the Queen Mother. Miss McMillan and two other Christchurch girls, Jennifer Halsey and Tui Shipston, have been invited to take part in the meeting. Miss McMillan’s coach, Mr V. T. Parkhouse, said last night she would be concentrating on 110yds, the distance at which she has been national women's champion for four successive years. “But,” he added, “if her 220yds comes to light, well and good.” Miss McMillan’s Imin 6.1 sec

in Melbourne is the best sprint time by a New Zealand woman this season, but she needs to achieve Imin ssec to come under the close scrutiny of the selectors. For the first two weeks of her programme, Miss McMillan will be kept on conditioning work by Mr Parkhouse. The distances she covers will be reduced gradually after this until she attains top racing speed. In effect, Mr Parkhouse will be condensing the whole training process, for Miss McMillan has a good deal of conditioning left in her. For all her mild disposition, Miss McMillan is very determined on the job and she is tackling her task with relish. As the result of discussions with her coach, her disappointment with her times at Napier has been replaced by a burning enthusiasm to win an Empire Games nomination. This, after all, was the

principle motive behind her transfer to Christchurch this season. She is determined not to let the sacrifices of the last few months go in vain.
