R.N.Z.A.F. PLANES
Case Put ForFs (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 2. A sales team from the Northrop Company of the United States today put its case to the Royal New Zealand Air Force for F 5 freedom fighters as replacements for Canberra bombers. The company’s Pacific marketing chief, Mr W. A. Weir, led the team. Its presentation was based on the premise that New Zealand wanted a low-cost plane which could adequately fill its limited air strike needs. Mr Weir said he would expect the Air Force to think in terms of 16 FSA single-seater fighters and six two-seater FSB fighter-trainers. These would cost just under £250,000 each. Full maintenance and spares for the whole fleet would cost just over £600,000 for the first year. Mr Weir said the Fss would give performance almost as good for about a third of the cost of its rivals, the F 4 Phantom and the Australian-built Mirage 111.
