Takehas Must Settle* Rugby Tour Issue
<N«i» Zealand Pr«<« Allocation)
GISBORNE, Feb. 13. The question of the inclusion of Maoris in the Rugby team to tour South Africa is a moral issue which confronts the Pakeha people only, in the opinion of the Tairawhiti District Council. After a meeting on Friday, the council said that the responsibility rested with the pakeha to demonstrate that Maoris and pakehas were one people and not two separate races. Any decision to send a team to South Africa was therefore entirely a matter for the pakeha people. The council met in committee and a statement was released afterwards. The chairman was Sir Turi Carroll and the meeting was attended by leading members of the district Maori community.
The council said that on the last tour to South Africa, no positive statement was made by any political leader. However, the climate of opinion in New Zealand since then had evolved so sympathetically towards the question of the non-inclusion of Maoris in any tour to South Africa that the political leaders had seen fit to make positive statements The district council received favourably the statements by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr N. E. Kirk).
