Close Contest In Horse Jumping

“The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL. Conditions were again ideal for the second day’s jumping in the Southland Horse Society show at Invercargill on Saturday. The highlight of the day was the Rutherford Cup, which is competed for annually by teams from horse society areas throughout New Zealand.

At the end of the first round Canterbury led with lj faults from South Canterbury-North Otago and Southland, all with 4 faults. Fortunes changed in the second round and South Canterbury, North Otago and Otago were equal in the lead with 4 faults. After an exciting jump-off against time, South Canter-bury-North Otago won with no faults against Otago’s 4 faults. A teams’ competition held In conjunction with the Rutherford Cup was won by a North Island team, with Australia third. After three rounds of the A grade puissance five horses were left to face an upright fence at sft 31n and a triple bar at 6ft 3in. Hi Fl. ridden by John Mulrhead, of Otago, and Limelight, ridden by Miss M. Rosis, of South Canterbury, jumped clear. Ramna (Australia). Town Boy (North Idland) and Tamasese

(Canterbury) each faulted at the big spread fence, thus tying for third place. The riders of the two leading horsee agreed, in view of their Mg day's jumping, to share the main prize.
