Tax Relief
Sir, —Mr Dempster now wants tax relief on wages. I understand that on wages paid to workers tax under P.A.Y.E. is deducted before the worker receives the money. Can he show how it is possible to avoid paying tax under P.A.Y.E.? Who first brought in income tax on the workers in New Zealand? Certainly the more wages one gets the higher the rates of taxation and higher cost of living. May I remind Mr Dempster and his colleagues that the cat is not chasing its tail; it has caught hold of it and it is scared stiff to let go, for if it does it will fly to bits.—Yours, etc, 70 YEARS. February 10, 1966.
