Sunday Bus Services
Sir,—On Sunday last the Sumner bus scheduled to arrive in the Square at 8.15 p.m. was seven minutes late; my connecting bus had gone. I and effiers found ourselves with over an hour’s wait. 1 visit elderly parents most week-ends and am in a constant fever as to whether the buses will connect, as this is not the! first time the Sumner bus has run late on a Sunday night. Generally speaking, our bus drivers do an excellent job, but this was inexcusable. The bus was ; ot running much behind time all the way. It was not crowded, no-one was standing, and no effort was made to make up the time. It “ambled” along. I have patronised trams and buses for 40 years and don’t expect to have to pay taxi fares unnecessarily. —Yours, e‘c. IRATE. February 7, 1966. [The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) replies: “This bus was delayed through a mechanical fault. Normally the 8.15 p.m. buses wait for churchgoers and depart the Square at 8.20 p.m. The buses on this occasion were held until 8.23 p.m. with expectation that the bus referred to by the writer would connect. Unfortunately, the bus did not arrive by 8.23 p.m. and it was not possible to delay the connecting buses beyond that time. Although mechanical faults of this nature are rare, I fully appreciate the situation of the writer and I apologise for any inconvenience suffered.”]
