WASHINGTON, Feb. 11.

Dr. Clarence L. Johnson, who has specialised in designing advanced aircraft besides the U2, received the National Medal of Science from President Johnson in a special White House ceremony honouring 11 leading scientists.

The citation accompanying Dr. Johnson’s award made no mention of the 1960 sensation when the U2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union.

Instead, Dr. Johnson was commended “for. bold innovations in the use of materials and in the design of aircraft of unsual configurations that pioneered new vistas for the possibility of flight.” In addition to the U2. the 55-year-old scientist who works for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, has designed the FlO4 Starfighter and the revolutionary All
