Stock On The Roads

Sir, —At 3.50 a.m. on January 3 while going to work at Lyttelton from Diamond Harbour by motor-cycle, 1 had the misfortune to collide with a sheep on the road a quarter of a mile west of Rapaki. 1 suffered injuries which are not yet heaied. Last Friday I again travelled over the same road, and encountered the following: Anderson’s corner to Charteris bay, six sheep; Teddington and flats, three ewes; Allendale, onq ewe; Dyer’s Pass to Small’s Hill, one ewe and lamb; Rocky Point, Rapaki, one ewe and lamb: between Cass Bay depot and Lyttelton boundary, one ram: in all 15 potential road hazards. This is not an isolated case. It is time the local bodies, concerned kept the roads clear of stock and gave the roaduser the protection he is entitled to. Or do these councils agree to such roadside g.azing?—Yours, etc., J. S. HUGHES, Diamond Harbour. February 9, 1966.
