Hurricane Relief

Sir, —The hurricane which struck Samoa was the worst for 75 years. It has been estimated that £2 million will be needed to keep the 120,000 population in food over the next few months. And what do we do? “The Government wjll make an immediate gift of £lO,OOO for the relief of hurricane victims in Western Samoa.” “The Auckland centre of the Red Cross Society to date has received £157 towards the national appeal for the relief of hurricane victims.” If New Zealand thought really seriously of effective international aid it would not give £300,000 towards a strategic road in Thailand and £lO,OOO towards hurricane victims in Samoa. Our international assistance should be concentrated where it can be effective: in the Pacific (Western Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji. etc.). —Yours, etc..
