More Australian Workers Sought

Orders for 400 skilled workmen from Australia had been placed by New Zealand industry with his employment bureau firm, said the Christchurch manager of the industrial division of Peak-Time Office Services (Mr R. F. Tyack) yesterday.

A member of the firm would visit Australia next week to recruit workers.

Another firm wanted 10 women for fashion-gown manufacturing. It was looking for Euro-pean-trained machinists. The printing industry group of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association wanted 10 printers from Australia, and New Zealand firms in the textile, plastics, and machinery trades were clamouring for skilled tradesmen.

By the end of February, he said, 75 persons would have been brought from Australia as a result of a trip in December by the company’s managing director (Mr A. Simmons). Five skilled tradesmen among those interviewed were expected to arrive from Melbourne today to work in Christchurch. They were moulders, fitters, and turners. Among those now sought were 150 for Christchurch and 100 for Wellington and the Hutt. There was hardly a town of any size between Invercargill and Auckland

Mr Tyack said his company intended to send an executive member to Australia each month or six weeks to look for staff.
