SAVINGS AT SCHOOL
Millionth Pass Book Today The millionth School Savings Bank pass book will be issued to a standard one pupil of the Avonhead Road School in a ceremony this morning. The Chief Postmaster (Mr J. W. Lincoln), will also make a presentation to the as yet unknown pupil. Mr Lincoln said yesterday that 24 per cent of the 660 pupils at the school were regular bankers. They were credited with a total of about £l5OO in savings. There are 228 Christchurch primary schools operating these accounts at the moment, involving 29,300 children and £155,247 in savings. In the New Zealand totals, more than £1.500.000 is credited in school accounts. Each school which operates an account receives a bonus ranging from £2O to £5O each year for handling School Savings Bank work, and this : money is usually used to purchase sporting equipment. “Primary school children are enthusiastic savers,” said Mr Lincoln. “Three million j deposits amounting to £600,000 are received yearly, and ' very few withdrawals are i made.”
