Fees For Indoor Bowls Unchanged

Affiliation and capitation fees to the Canterbury Indoor Bowls Association will not be raised from 2s 6d to 5s per member this year.

After a discussion lasting more than an hour the notice of motion advocating the increase was lost on a show of hands by the 125 delegates at last evening’s annual general meeting of the association. During the discussion the president (Mr R. Hogwood) ruled that an amendment asking for an increase to 3s 6d was out of order. His ruling followed the secretary reading clause 16 which stated that no amendment could be accepted if it altered the sense of the motion. Speaking to the motion, Mr R. J. Watkin said that no increase had been made since 1960. He said that fees should cover basic expenses. “The affiliation fee is half that of some other major centres,’’ said Mr Watkin. A letter was received from the secretary of the Arhman I Club, Darfield (Mr R. S. Williams), saying that should the

motion be carried his club would have to severe its connexion with the association. Mr Hagwood: They have about eight members. A voice: Forget them, Mr A. G. Blanch (South Brighton) said that the association would gain financially but would lose in membership. “We may lose some clubs, especially those in the suburbs. At least three have never bowled in town and have no intention of doing so.” IST Clubs Affiliated A total of 157 clubs, comprising 5122 members, were affiliated to the association last year, said the president <Mr Hogwood) in his annual report Mr Hogwood said that although new clubs were still being formed, he did not think that the association had yet reached its peak. The report also congratulated Mr M. D. Penney on his elecItion as president of the New I Zealand Federation. Mr Hogwood said that Mr Penney was the second Canterbury man to receive this honour in the last three years. During the last season a spe cial general meeting had de tided that the association should reserve the first and third Sundays of every month for its 50/50 tournaments. Other Sundays were left open to clubs, said the report.
