CRAYFISH GLUT
Price Drops In U.S. (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WHANGAREI, Feb. 8 Over-supply of crayfish tails on the New York market after large imports from South Africa has dropped the price sharply by Is 6d a lb. Mr H. Yovich, managingdirector of Hikurangi Fisheries, said the price before the drop ranged from 10s to 12s. The drop in price in America, "our main market,” would be reflected in prices in New Zealand for fishermen, merchants and retailers. Mr Yovich said his firm was still recovering leg meat from crayfish and getting 5s a lb for it. To get rid of them they were selling the bodies in New Zealand for 6d each. He said they were fortunate in that they had sold a consignment of tails to Europe at the old price, but did not know how long this could be maintained.
