TROTTING On Probation Sound Blenheim Prospect

If On Probation produces one of his best runs at Blenheim tomorrow his Belfast trainer and owner, G. S. Donald, should have an excellent chance of harnessing his second successive Marlborough Handicap winner. ... . _ • -£W Uanrlinon CAnrtnz* Inn

Twelve months ago

the Donald stable was represented successfully by Password in the first leg of the Marlborough Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double.

On Probation was unplaced at Forburv Park last Saturday night but at his previous start he looked very unlucky not to have won the Hororata Handicap, also over two miles. In that event he finished brilliantly for third after being hopelessly placed till the home turn. Second Line

Tomorrow On Probation has drawn No. 13 on the limit. That means he will start from the second line. But with average luck he could be better off there for horses drawn wide on the front at the two mile barrier at Blenheim are usually at a big disadvantage. If Calm Autumn has held the form which gave her three thirds from three starts at Nelson she could be the hardest for On Probation to beat. Calm Autumn lacks brilliance but she is game and consistent and stays fairly well. Her first placing at Nelson was behind Third Chief and My Word over two miles. This time Calm Autumn meets Third Chief .the Nelson Cup winner, and My Word, which followed up his cup second with a win over a mile and a half on the second day of the meeting, on 36 yards better terms. In spite of their handicap Third Chief and My Word could still be major contenders, as could Viewin, which is also on 36 yards. Viewin ruined two chances

at Nelson by galloping off the mark but she made short work of her sprint rivals on Monday after making a brilliant beginning. But if Richard Hanover, Hal Special, Goldwater and Light Silk, which are all on the limit, run up to their best Nelson form all of the handicapped horses will have to go exceptionally well to get into the finish. Beside On Probation, the best of the other newcomers off the front mark could be Le Whip or Allakasam. which both have winning form close up on the records. Chainan Fancied On Probation’s stablemate, Chaman, could be the popular fancy for the Breayley Mera-

orial Handicap, second leg of the main double. Chaman will be trying for his second win in succession and his third for the season. His latest success was in the A. J. Harris Memorial Handicap at Hororata last Saturday week.

Frosty Heather, Chief Smile and Our Smokey are notable rivals with which Chaman will have to contend. Frosty Heather capped off a solid patch of placed form with a narrow but impressive win at Nelson on Monday. Chief Smile won the corresponding race, in which Frosty Heather was third, on the first day at Nelson and Our Smokey was successful twice at that fixture. Unreal, which chased Richard Hanover home and outfinished Chief Smile in the Stewards’ Handicap on Monday should also have solid backing. Bar None and Certify, both minor place-getters at Nelson, appeal most of the others. 2 S MARLBOROUGH HANDICAP, £500; 2:17 class: 2m.
