N. Districts Out For 176

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. Northern Districts’ fluent left-hand batsman, G. V. Giles, and the young Wellington pace bowler, A. R. Taylor, were prominent on the first day of a Plunket Shield cricket match at Hamilton yesterday. After a bad Start, in which four wickets crashed for 32. Northern Districts recovered to be all out for 176. Wellington would have had 10 minutes batting at the end of the day but for rain. Earlier in the afternoon rain interrupted play for nearly an hour. Giles led Northern Districts scoring with an exceedingly good 81 which must have impressed two New Zealand selectors, M. E. Chapple and K. R. Deas, who were watching.

Earlier in this shield series, Chapple, as captain of Central Districts, was in the field when Giles hit a good 64 for Northern Districts at Tau--ranga. He batted better yesterday than he did at Tauranga and better probably than when he scored 60 for Northern Districts against

the South Africans two years ago.

Taylor earlier dislodged B. Sutcliffe just when the former international looked on the way to a big score. Always trying hard, Taylor finished the innings in a blaze of glory when he took four wickets in his last 25 deliveries and did not concede a run. He finished with six wickets for 47 runs.

Northern Districts’ disappointing early batting on a first-rate wicket was attributable to inadequacies in the batting rather than to any undue fire or guile in the bowling. The Wellington bowlers, however, all tried hard and were supported by keen fieldsmen. A slow outfield helped to restrict the scoring rate.
