ICEBREAKER CALLS
Returning To Seattle Homeward bound from McMurdo Sound to Seattle, the United States Navy icebreaker Burton Island called at Lyttelton at the week-end. It is two months and a half since the Burton Island left Lyttelton to clear a channel into MeMurdo Sound, a task which she shared with the Glacier and Atka. At the end of December the Burton Island made a fortnight’s cruise along the Victoria Land coast as far as Cape Adare. A study of seals and plant life on the mainland and off-shore islands was made by American scientists.
The ship took aboard some New Zealand scientists at Cape Hallett end landed some at the Possession Islands to further the study of penguins and bird life.
Among passengers who returned from Antarctica aboard the icebreaker, was Mr F. C. Kinsky, Dominion Museum ornithologist who was taken off Cape Hallet by helicopter after spending three months there making a biological study of penguins and skuas.
The Burton Island left for Wellington yesterday afternoon and she will sail for San Diego on February 7 to unload her helicopters and their crews before returning to Seattle.
