ARTISTS APPEARING WITH ORCHESTRA

The -N.Z.B.C. Symphony will have three conductors and nine overseag eoloiits in its eight eubacription concerts which start in April. In addition to Juan Matteued there will be two guest conductors, Franz-Paul Decker, chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic since 1962, and Herrera de la Fuente, conductor of the Mexican National Symphony. Two of the soloists have visited New Zealand previously, the pianist Louis Kenter and Rita Streich, a star soprano of the Vienna State Opera. Rita Streich will also give a recital in Christchurch in September. Another soprano who will sing with the orchestra and give a vocal recital is Stefania Woytowicz, a Polish artist who first achieved fame in Britain with an Edinburgh Festival recital several years ago.

Two British soloists are Raymond Cohen, a violinist who won recognition as a soloist and as leader of the Royal Philharmonic, and Kendall Taylor, a pianist who will combine appearances with the orchestra with his visit as a Royal Schools of Music examiner.

The youthful Vienna Trio, which won the 10th Munich International Music Competition and which is touring New Zealand for the Cham: ber Music Federation, will

join the orchestra for tnple concerto.

Besides a Mexican conductor, Christchurch will hear a Mexican pianist, Jose Kahan, both with the orchestra and in a recital, so that some Mexican music is bound to turn up in the programmes. Kahan has won three international competitions, toured the United States with the Mexican National Symphony in 1962, and has played in more than 35 countries. RECITALISTS

Four other artists will give recitals in Christchurch for the N.Z.B.C. The American violinist, Ruggiero Ried, will give a redtai in June while making his second New Zealand tour. The American pianist, Eugene Istomin, will play here in May. Istomin is the pianist member of the Stern-Rose-Istomin chamber-music trio. Early in his career he won a Leventritt award, one of the two major American piano competitions, and recently he was described by the “New York Times” as “a model of modern pianism; technically brilliant, intelligent, controlled and logical.” Another American artist is the violinist Henri Temiahka, who studied at the Berlin and Paris Conservatories and at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He is also prominent in chamber music and conducts his own chamber orchestra.

The British pianist, Moura Lympany, one of the world’s best-known women pianists, will give a redtai in September.

The Soviet soprano Zara Dolukhanova and the Japanese pianist Reiko Matsuzaki. who has settled in Welling-' ton, will give concerts in other centres. ISRAEL ORCHESTRA The Israel Philharmonic will now visit New Zealand in September. Although the original announcement said the conductors would be Guilini and Zubin Mehta, only the tour of Mehta is definite and one other conductor will be engaged. A Bombay-born Indian, Mehta is conductor of the Montreal! Symphony and Los Angeles i Philharmonic, and recently began an international recording career. Concert dates are: April 2, 26: N.Z.B.C. Symphony. May 17: Istomin; 28: Patrick O’Hagen. June 23: Ried. July 20: Temianka; 26; Woytowicz; 30: NJS.B.C. Symphony. August 6: N.Z.B.C. Symphony. September 7, 10: Israel Philharmonic; 17: Lympany; 26: Streich. October 6,7: N.Z.B.C. Symphony; 17: Kahan.
