George Devine Dead
George Devine, the actor and producer and former director of the Royal Court’s English Stage Company, has died, aged 55. One of the most brilliant contemporary figures in British theatre, Devine breathed new life into it when it was at a tow ebb. In the last 10 years he mounted more than 120 productions, excluding Sunday try-outs: he discovered John Osborne presenting “Look Back In Anger," and gave English drama writers as varied as Beckett, Arden, Wesker and Pinter; he fought the Lord Chamberlain to get Samuel Beckett’s “endgame” on to the stage, first having to produce it in French.
