Sobig Scratched After Poor Trials
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. The failure of Sobig to show his real worth while galloping at Trentham this waas has mystified his trainer, G. W. B. Greene, and owner, Mr G. A. Mitchell. Because of his disappointing work on Thursday and again yesterday morning he has been scratched for the Wellington Cup. “Perhaps he just does not like the place,” said Mr Mitchell of Palmerston North. Perhaps he recalled Sobig’s sensational failure when a three-year-old last autumn. Sobig was beaten by Magician, a more moderate perfor-
mer, when galloping at Trentham on Thursday and showed no relish Cor the half-mile sprint given him this morning. “He is doing well otherwise,” said Mr Mitchell, “and we just do not know why he is not galloping as fast as he can. He would need to improve before a start on one of the later days of the meeting could be considered for him.” The other main races for which Sobig seemed likely to be a prominent candidate are the Trentham Stakes, weight-for-age, 11 furlongs, on Monday and the George Adams Handicap, of £6OOO, a mile, next Saturday.
