AUSTRALIAN WOOL
Sales, Prices Lower (N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Jan. 17. Sales of Australian wool during the period July-December last year totalled 2,229,415 bales, worth £165,265,202, the National Council of Wool Selling Brokers reports. This compared with 2.420,175 bales worth £188,871,961 in the corresponding period of the previous year. Average price of greasy wool during the period was 58.41 d per pound and that for scoured 63.68 d against 61.66 d and 80.84 d respectively for the previous season. Receipts into store totalled 3,526,731 bales. At the end of December there were 1,293,549 bales in store awaiting disposal. Shipments for sale abroad amounted to 3767 bales.
Exchange Rates
The £NZ gained on most other currencies last week, including the United States and Canadian dollars. Altered telegraphic transfer exchange rates, as advised by the Bank of New South Wales, were: New Zealand on: New Y T ork: Buy, 2.7997 dollars (compared with 2.7990 dollars on January 7); selling, 2.7680 dollars (2.7672). Austria: 72.77 schillings <72.74): 71.21 schillings (71.18). Belgium: 140.00 francs (139.50): 137.00 (136.50). Canada: 3.0111 dollars (3.0054): 2.9726 dollars (2.9670). Denmark: 19.39 kroner (19.37); 18.98 kroner (18.96). France: 13.80 francs (same): 13.51 francs (13.50). Italy: 1759 lire (1757); 1722 lire (1720). Japan: 1016 yen (1015); 993 yen (992). Netherlands: 10.18 guilders (10.16) 9.96 guilders (9.94). Sweden: 14.55 kroner (14.56); 14.24 kroner (14.25). Switzerland; 12.20 francs (12.17) 11.94 francs (11.91). Western Germany; 11.30 marks (11.29); 11.05 marks (11.04).
