Riccarton Road Traffic Problems Studied
Riccarton road parking and problems caused by traffic in and out of the Riccarton Mall shopping centre were studied yesterday as a preliminary to a report to the next meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council’s works committee.
The inspection was made by the Town Clerk of Riccarton (Mr R. Sarjeant), the borough engineer (Mr R. A. E. Upston), the Metropolitan Planning Authority’s traffic engineer (Mr M. Douglass) and the Transport Department’s chief officer (Mr A. Goldsmith). At the December meeting of the council, criticism was expressed that no action had been taken to impose restrictions on Riccarton road parking, although the matter had been under consideration for three years. Cr. D. A. Anderson asked why the detailed plan, pre-
pared by the Riccarton Business Association, had not been adopted, and Cr. G. A. Franks failed in an effort to put a motion to impose 60minute parking on Riccarton road from Matipo street to Picton avenue.
Yesterday’s inspection took into account the location of pedestrian crossings and existing no-stopping areas, the extent to which side streets are used for parking, and Riccarton Mall’s traffic. Efforts to stop right-hand turns into the mall from Riccarton road have not been wholly successful. The officials will prepare a report to the works committee, which is likely to make recommendations to the next meeting of the council.
