Sumatra Execution Team
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) DJAKARTA, January 6. A special team to shoot traders who create economic disorder and confusion has been formed in Atjeh, at the northern tip of Sumatra. | The official Indonesian news agency, Antara, said the team was formed to safeguard the implementation of a Presidential decree to devalue the worth of the rupiah. Lieutenant-Colonel Sjarif
Hidajat, commander of Atjeh, has warned the local merchants to refrain from actions which might create economic disorder. He warned them that another Presidential decision specified the death penalty for “economic manipulators,” and “criminals who disrupted the national economy.” The Islamic Students’ Association has urged that the revaluation of the rupiah should not be used as a camoflage for increased prices.
Antara reported yesterday that bus fares on publiclyowned transport in Djakarta had been raised five times from 200 rupiahs to one new rupiah (1000 old rupiahs) with immediate effect. At the same time motor transport fares for goods have been raised three times. According to newspaper reports, the State-owned railways have raised passenger fares eight times and freight rates 10 times.
