FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation: The depression west of the North Island is moving slowly east while the ridge of high pressure over southern New Zealand is intensifying. Forecast: Canterbury: Moderate southerly winds; fresh in the north. Cloudy and cool with rather persistent rain in the north and occasional rain elsewhere, mainly during the morning. Outlook: Partly cloudy. Buller and Westland: Winds moderate and variable; occasional rain this morning mostly in Buller, but partly cloudy in the afternoon. Moderate temperatures. Outlook: Partly cloudy. Nelson and Marlborough: Fresh southerlies about the Kaikoura coast and the Sounds with rather persistent rain; elsewhere moderate variable winds with occasional rain this morning, but improving this afternoon; cool to moderate temperatures.
