Mt. Cook Climbed Mount Cook was climbed by two members of the Miji University Alpine Club by way of the Linda Glacier yesterday, said the Mount Cook National Park -Board's chief ranger (Mr M. L. Burke). Mount Lendenfeld (10,503 feet) was climbed by a party of four Australians, headed by Mr R. Wyborn. Messrs N. Rodda, I. Gardiner, G. Norris, and A. Panton climbed Mount Low (9653 feet), Mount Jellicoe, and La Perouse (10,101 feet). The weather was partly cloudy and warm, with no rain.— (F.0.0.R.)

Dull And Damp Christchurch weather yesterday was generally overcast and dull with light rain. Temperatures remained steady at 59deg between 9 a.m. and noon, and dropped only ldeg in the afternoon. There was a light to moderate north-easterly wind.

One new subject, Chinese, will be introduced at Auckland University this year into the bachelor of arts degree course. It will be available to two stages. The tutor will be Professor D. Lancashire, who is head of the newly-created department of Asian languages and literature. He was formerly senior lecturer in the department of Oriental studies at Melbourne University.

Beaches Quiet i Drizzle and a cold easterly wind discouraged swimming at Christchurch beaches yesterday. New Brighton had the biggest number of swimmers in the afternoon —about a dozen. There were four at North Beach and eight at Sumner. The surf was small and choppy, but the water was relatively warm at 65deg.
