SENT TO TIMARU
Ship Carrying Oranges
Because of the congestion at Lyttelton the Union Company’s Tarawera, carrying 12,841 cases of Victorian oranges, has been diverted to Timaru. The Tarawera arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington early on Wednesday morning and sailed yesterday afternoon because she was unable to obtain a working berth. Labour was short again yesterday and at 7 a.m. there was a shortage of 463 men, while 547 were employed. But shipping officials said that if the men had been available it would have been impossible to have worked them all without causing obstruction and delays on the wharfside. Vessels idle were the Calm, Konani, Port Lincoln, Katea and Squall.
The Castor and the Baron Maclay, both with bulk cargoes for discharge, remained anchored off the heads. The Olivebank with phosphate from Makatea was due in the anchorage at midnight yesterday. The three vessels will be joined today by the Megantic with more than 2000 tons of general cargo from Britain. Some sailings were delayed by the rain which interrupted waterfront work yesterday. The deputy-harbourmaster (Captain J. Duncan) said there was little likelihood of the congestion easing for at least a week.
