31 Rinks Qualify For Post-Section Play In Fours

Thirty-one of the 478 rinks entered in the national bowling tournament fours championships can face today’s matches with equanimity. By winning all their six matches they qualified for the post-section play in the fours.

A further 56 teams have five wins but there are many other teams with four wins for whom today’s play is of vital importance as they have to win two matches to qualify.

The major surprises of the third day's play in the rinks was produced by two Auckland teams—the Auckland four skipped by J. H. Rabone and W. P. O’Neill’s Carlton four.

Rabone lost his third game yesterday when he was beaten, 27-24, by C. A. White (United, Nelson) and now has no chance of qualifying. O’Neill’s team lost to a rather lowly rated Woolston four skipped by J. F. Allison (Woolston) and now has to win both matches today to qualify. However, Allison’s win was well deserved His play was tighter than the Carlton team and he stood up well to pressure exerted by O’Neill in the final stages. W. L. Hampton (Naenae) lost his second game yester-

day when he was beaten, 31-20, by H. R. Pool (Elmwood), who on Tuesday beat Rabone. Hampton is in the same position as O'Neill: he has to win both matches today to qualify. Lost No. 2

The cheerful P. E. B. Jones, skip of last year’s winning Otahuhu Railways team, qualified with six wins even though the team lost its number two, G. Mcßae, for the afternoon match when he had to withdraw with a leg injury. His place was filled capably by E. Williamson (Shirley), who fitted perfectly into the next pattern of this very capable four. The laconic A. Connew (Carlton) also gained six wins but he had his awkward moments against opponents who seemed to regard the name Connew as a challenge. The experience of A. Connew, the adroit drawing of M. Connew, and the reliability of the leads brought them through two hard matches. A. L. Rudduck (Meadowbank), one of the pairs finalists, continued with his impressive form when he beat M. Rice (Opawa), who had had four wins, 38-5, in the morning. But in the afternoon, Rudduck had to produce all his skill to avoid defeat from L. T. McKendry (Dallington) and finally won a tense match 29-28.

The very capable Point Chevalier team skipped by J. N. S. Flett, skip of the pairs championship team in 1963, recorded six impressive victories. Back With Sun

However, another favoured Auckland team, R. Andrew’s Onehunga four, finished with five wins only when it was demolished 33-17 in the morning round. Andrews had gained some large victories until then but his team could not handle the conditions at the R.S.A. No. 2 green. The sunshine in the afternoon brought some response from the team and then it won quite decisively. Another Carlton four skipped by W. Clayworth failed to produce its earlier good form and lost two games yesterday. The fine drawing of the Auckland team often was upset and on many heads the side had to recourse to burning the heads to save points. This they did with some success but eventually points were given away and they face a hard task today. Next to them the redoubtable Ranfurly team provided some of the brightest moments at Dallington and again through their skip, L. C. S. Dougherty. One of his drives this morning sent a bowl hurtling over the ditch to crash into a woman spectator. After that the gallery remained at a respectful distance. Wooden Bowls

For a player to use wooden bowls now probably is like Gary Player driving a “gutta percha” golf ball, but J. Howatson, skip of the Spreydon team, which has won all six matches, swears by his Jaques wooden bowls which he thinks are nearly 60 years old.

P. C. Skoglund won his two matches today to finish with five wins, but in the same section A. Govorko (Te Puke) lost his first match when he was well beaten by R. L. Rossiter (Burwood) 29-19. In the earlier round he had been in trouble against P. A. Hardie (Napier), who after being down 14-23 caught up to 24-24 and lost on the last end.

The wily W. Chegwidden (Palmerston North) continued his winning way and finished the third round with six wins. He is in section 21, which contains such well-known names as Rabone, Hampton and Jolly, but his play has been the most impressive of all. R. L. McDonald yesterday produced the smooth and skilful bowling that is expected from him to record two good victories. He may yet atone for his summary dismissal from the pairs and singles fields.
