INSPECTION OF FORESTS
Light Aircraft To Be Used
The New Zealand Forest Service will make aerial inspections of North Canterbury forests during the next few days. The assistant conservator (Mr B. Childs) said yesterday that aircraft would be used to inspect the forests and seek out any potential fire risks. The aircraft would fly over the forest perimeters to inspect camps of holiday makers and shooters. Ground inspections would follow if they were considered necessary.
Mr Childs described the present fire risk as dangerous in the North Canterbury area from Eyrewell to Hanmer. In the rest of the conservancy there was little danger at present.
Fairly high temperatures and low humidity readings aggravated the situation yesterday. So far there have been no forest fires during the holiday period.
Cambridge Betting.—lnvestments with the Totalisator Agency board bn the Cambridge Trotting Club’s meeting last night amounted to £90,342. Win and place bets amounted to £45,774 and £44.568 was invested on the double. The off-course substitute was Orbiter.
