Soaring Costs

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Jan. 5. The soaring costs of the Vietnam war will force President Johnson to ask Congress for a further defence appropriation of 13,000 million dollars this month, according to authoritative sources. The figure came as a surprise to observers, who earlier had believed that the request would be in the region of 2000 million or 3000 million dollars. The new request, if approved by Congress, will bring supplementary appropriations for Vietnam in the current financial year, ending June 30, to about 14,700 million dollars.
