DROUGHT IN SUVA

Water Storage Dropping

(N.Z. Press Association > AUCKLAND. Dec. 29. Further measures were adopted in Suva today to deal with the growing water shortage, says the “New Zealand Herald’s” Suva correspondent. The Public Works Department has announced that the main supply valves have been adjusted to reduce pressure. Stop-cocks in premises throughout the Suva area have also been adjusted. The department said that in spite of appeals last week the water situation had worsened.

When the appeal was made, water was being used at the rate of 4,000,000 gallons a day and the inflow to the reservoirs was 250,000 gallons less. Consumption had since dropped to 3,750,000 gallons, but the flow into the reservoir had dropped to 3,250,000 gal ions. Suva had a shower last night but not a drop fell in the catchment area.

In some country districts and outer islands the drought has reached serious proportions. Domestic water supplies are being sent by barge and road.
