FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation, —A depression centred east of the South Island is moving away rapidly eastwards. Forecast:

Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson.— West to south-west winds, strong at times in exposed places; showers about the ranges and Banks Peninsula; mainly fine elsewhere but one or two isolated showers; cool. Outlook: Mainly fine.

Buller and Westland.—West to southwest winds, strong at times; cold and changeable with frequent showers, heavy at times with some hail and thunder. Outlook: Showers.
